Variety
Variety is defined as the quality or state of having different forms or types. Variety holds a major importance in training as it develops the supporting structure of specific primary task and it relieves boredom. Training in a specific task is often a prolonged activity, for maximum performance to be obtained, the athlete must interrelate other types of training that are still going to assist the athlete in reaching their primary goal and this will also help in keeping the activity interesting, maintaining the athletes motivation and preventing boredom.
An example of how strength training can be implemented into a sport is rugby. The athlete needs to be thoroughly trained to work a variety of tasks, running, tackling and catching. This means that the athlete will need to train their whole body to be able to play at a level of high performance, strength will need to be trained, so that the athlete can overpower the competitors, legs will need to be trained so that the athlete has the power to take off quickly.
An example of how aerobic training can be implemented into a sport is in baseball. The baseball pitcher has other physical activities associated with their primary role such as running, catching and batting. If this athlete is well trained to perform in these three areas as well as their primary role, they will be classified as a much more valuable athlete. This athlete will need to train endurance, speed, velocity, and pitching.
